India has begun issuing chip-enabled e-passports to modernise its travel documentation and align with international standards. Unlike traditional booklets, these e-passports include a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip embedded in the cover that securely stores biometric and personal data such as fingerprints, facial recognition and demographic details. The biometric chip makes the passport harder to forge and easier to verify at borders, offering stronger protection against identity fraud and tampering.
These passports are issued under the Passport Seva Programme Version 2.0, a nationwide rollout designed to make travel more secure and immigration checks faster and more reliable. India has joined over 120 countries issuing biometric passports, bringing improved contactless scanning, reduced queue times and global interoperability to Indian travellers. Existing traditional passports remain valid until their expiry, but all new and renewed passports are issued with the embedded chip by default.
Who can apply: Any Indian citizen eligible for a standard passport can get an e-passport through the Passport Seva portal and local Passport Seva Kendras. Police verification and document submission follow the usual process. Application fees are the same as for regular passports, typically ₹1,500 for a 36-page booklet and ₹2,000 for a 60-page booklet, with additional charges for expedited (Tatkal) service.
By boosting security, streamlining immigration, and improving traveller convenience, the e-passport represents a significant step toward a digitally advanced, globally trusted travel identity for Indians.
