Birender Singh, born on March 25, 1946, is a veteran Indian politician known for his deep influence on Haryana's political and developmental landscape. With a career spanning over four decades, Singh has played a key role in both state and national politics, earning a reputation for his grassroots leadership and policy-driven approach.
Starting as a social activist, Singh quickly rose through the ranks, serving multiple terms in the Haryana Legislative Assembly from the Uchana constituency (1977–2009). He held crucial cabinet positions in the Haryana government, handling portfolios like Cooperatives, Dairy Development, Revenue, and Finance.
Elected to the Lok Sabha from Hisar in 1984, Singh expanded his influence at the national level, later joining the Rajya Sabha in 2010 as an INC member. In 2014, he shifted to the BJP and was appointed Union Cabinet Minister, overseeing the Ministry of Rural Development and later the Ministry of Steel.
However, in April 2024, Singh, along with his wife Prem Lata, resigned from the BJP and rejoined the Congress party.
Known for his straightforward approach, Singh remains a respected political figure, dedicated to progress and good governance, leaving a lasting impact on Indian politics.
