A transformative public-private partnership in Ghaziabad is tackling the urban water crisis through decentralized purification units. These "Water ATMs" utilize advanced Reverse Osmosis (RO) and UV filtration technologies to provide World Health Organization (WHO)-standard drinking water to thousands of low-income residents and daily wage laborers.
Key Features of the Ghaziabad Model
• Affordability & Accessibility: By using pre-paid smart cards or UPI-enabled mobile payments, residents can dispense water starting at 20 paise for 100ml up to ₹20 for a 20-liter jar. This is roughly 80% cheaper than branded bottled water.
• Sustainability Focus: Most units are equipped with rooftop solar panels, ensuring they remain operational during power outages. Furthermore, the initiative encourages the use of reusable containers, preventing an estimated 50,000 single-use plastic bottles from entering landfills every month.
• Real-Time Monitoring: Each ATM is connected to a central IoT (Internet of Things) dashboard. This allows the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation to monitor water quality parameters, filter health, and daily consumption patterns in real-time.
• Health Impact: Since the rollout in late 2025, local health clinics in the pilot zones have reported a 30% decline in cases of waterborne illnesses like cholera and typhoid, particularly among children.
Empowering Local Entrepreneurs
The project operates on a "Water-Preneur" model, where local residents are trained to maintain the machines and manage the kiosks. This has created over 200 micro-employment opportunities within the district, blending social impact with a self-sustaining business model.
