GBS Outbreak in Maharashtra: 205 Cases and Growing—What’s Behind the Surge?

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder where the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, numbness, and, in severe cases, paralysis. Recently, Maharashtra has been grappling with a significant GBS outbreak, with the number of cases steadily increasing.

As of February 14, 2025, the state has reported a total of 205 suspected and confirmed GBS cases. Among these, 177 have been confirmed, with 20 patients requiring ventilator support. The death toll stands at eight, with the most recent fatality being a 53-year-old man in Mumbai, marking the first death in the city due to this condition.

The majority of cases have been concentrated in Pune, where 166 suspected cases have been reported. Of these, 130 have been confirmed as GBS, with 61 patients currently in intensive care units and 21 on ventilator support.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has sealed 19 private reverse osmosis (RO) plants in the Nanded village area, the epicenter of the outbreak, after tests confirmed that water from these facilities was unfit for drinking.

GBS is characterized by sudden muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the limbs, and, in severe cases, difficulties in swallowing or breathing. The exact cause of the outbreak remains under investigation, but health officials are focusing on potential environmental factors, including contaminated water sources.

The state health department has set up a Rapid Response Team to investigate the sudden rise in GBS cases and is conducting surveillance in the affected areas.

In response to the outbreak, health authorities are emphasizing the importance of maintaining proper hygiene, ensuring access to safe drinking water, and seeking prompt medical attention for symptoms indicative of GBS.

The situation is being closely monitored, with ongoing efforts to contain the spread and provide necessary medical care to those affected.
