Ajay Gopinath, a former banker from Kerala, transformed his career by cultivating microgreens in his home, achieving monthly earnings of approximately ₹3.5 lakh. In 2020, he left his position at Citigroup to pursue organic farming, focusing on microgreens a nutrient-dense superfood.
Starting with a modest 64-square-foot room in his Kochi residence, Ajay began experimenting with microgreen cultivation around 2017-2018. After two years of research and trials, he established a commercial operation. By 2022, he was growing 15 varieties of microgreens, harvesting about 5 kilograms daily, and generating monthly sales between ₹2 to ₹3 lakh.
Ajay's microgreens are sold under the brand name "Grow Greens," with prices starting at ₹150 per 100 grams. He supplies to a diverse clientele, including hotels, gyms, hospitals, and individual consumers. Notably, his products are also purchased by celebrities.
In addition to his cultivation efforts, Ajay has expanded his business by launching a franchise model. This initiative has led to the establishment of over 30 units across Kerala, Bengaluru, and Chennai, where he provides training and supplies to aspiring microgreen farmers.
Ajay's success story highlights the potential of urban agriculture and the growing demand for healthy, locally sourced produce. His journey from banking to microgreen farming exemplifies how passion and innovation can lead to a thriving business, even within the confines of a small urban space.
