Everyone’s raving about this homemade shampoo—does it actually work?

The internet is buzzing over a viral homemade shampoo that claims to leave your hair clean, soft, and shiny using simple, natural ingredients. The concoction, made from chickpea flour (besan), honey, coconut oil, and water, has garnered attention for its supposed effectiveness. But does it truly work?

Social media users have shared their experiences with this DIY shampoo, claiming that it not only cleans the scalp but also leaves hair feeling nourished. One content creator, Sonia Gautam, mentioned that her scalp felt “100% clean” after using the mixture. However, she also noted that her hair felt slightly dry, requiring additional conditioning.

According to cosmetologist Dr. Karuna Malhotra, this shampoo can indeed offer natural benefits, but its effectiveness largely depends on individual hair types. Chickpea flour acts as a natural cleanser, efficiently removing dirt and excess oil from the scalp. Honey works as a humectant, drawing moisture into the hair, which is especially beneficial for dry or frizzy hair. Meanwhile, coconut oil provides nourishment, helping to reduce protein loss and improve hair strength.

HOW TO MAKE AND USE THE VIRAL SHAMPOO

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons chickpea flour (besan)

1 tablespoon honey

1 tablespoon coconut oil

1 cup water

PROCESS

Mix the chickpea flour with water to form a smooth, thin paste.

Add honey and coconut oil, and blend well until all ingredients are combined.

Apply the mixture to your wet scalp and hair.

Gently massage for a few minutes, focusing on the roots.

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Follow up with a conditioner if your hair feels dry.

While the natural ingredients may offer some benefits, Dr. Malhotra advises performing a patch test before full application to check for any allergic reactions. Since everyone’s hair and scalp type differ, results may vary. If you experience dryness, it’s essential to condition your hair well after use.
