Can an Indian smart device startup take on global giants?

If you look around Indian homes today, security cameras, video doorbells, and dashcams are no longer rare gadgets. They are becoming everyday necessities. One Indian brand has played a big role in this shift: Qubo.

Founded in 2018 under Hero Electronix, Qubo has grown into India’s largest smart consumer connected devices company. In just a few years, it has shipped over one million devices and crossed ₹275 crore in revenue by FY2025. But numbers alone do not explain why Qubo stands out.

What truly makes Qubo different is a bold decision most hardware startups avoid. Instead of depending on imported technology or third-party platforms, Qubo chose to build everything in India, from hardware and firmware to cloud systems and AI algorithms. That makes it a rare, full-stack, Made-in-India tech product company competing in a global market.

The People Behind Qubo

Qubo’s journey is led by a strong and diverse founding team.
Nikhil Rajpal, Founder and CEO, brings over two decades of experience from McKinsey, EY-Parthenon, and the automotive world at Fiat Chrysler. His strength lies in turning complex technology into scalable businesses.

Nitin Dua, Co-Founder and COO/CPO, helped shape Qubo from day one. With experience at Bain & Company and Paytm, and education from IIT Guwahati and IIM Bangalore, he focuses on execution, customer experience, and product growth.

Anup Cheruvathoor, Co-Founder and CTO, adds deep technical muscle. With over 30 years in semiconductors and embedded systems, he ensures Qubo’s products are reliable, secure, and built for Indian conditions.

In May 2025, Qubo strengthened its leadership further by appointing Nikhil Sareen as Co-Founder. Known for building strong consumer brands like Strauss Sport and Vahdam India, his role signals Qubo’s ambition to scale faster and think globally.

What Does Qubo Make?

At its core, Qubo focuses on smart security and automation. Its product range includes AI-powered security cameras, video doorbells, smart locks, sensors, smart plugs, bulbs, air purifiers, and robot vacuums.

Qubo is also a leader in automotive tech, especially dashcams. With nearly 400,000 dashcams sold, it dominates a category that is still at a very early stage in India.

All these devices are connected through one ecosystem, the Qubo Home app. This single app lets users control everything, set automations, receive alerts, and integrate with Alexa or Google Assistant. Simple, unified, and designed for everyday users.

Who Is Qubo Building For?

Qubo started with urban, security-conscious families in Tier-1 cities. Today, nearly 40 percent of its users come from Tier-2 cities, and the brand is present in over 100 cities across India.

Its customers include working professionals, parents, apartment residents, small businesses, and car owners who care about safety, privacy, and value for money. Importantly, Qubo’s promise of India-hosted data and strong privacy protection resonates deeply with today’s consumers.

How the Business Works

Qubo follows an omnichannel model. About 65 percent of its sales come online through Amazon, Flipkart, Blinkit, and its own website. The remaining 35 percent comes from offline retail, with presence in 3,000 plus stores and plans to expand further.

Revenue mainly comes from device sales, with growing contributions from premium products, installation services, and future subscription-based services.

Challenges and How Qubo Responds

The smart home market in India is still young. Less than 5 percent of homes use smart security devices, and dashcams are installed in only about 1 percent of vehicles. Awareness, trust, and education remain challenges.

Qubo’s response has been clear: educate the market, not just sell products. Through retail demos, digital content, influencer campaigns, and strong after-sales support, it is building trust category by category.

Competition is another challenge, especially from global tech giants and low-cost Chinese brands. Qubo counters this with data sovereignty, India-optimised AI, local manufacturing, and full control over its technology stack, advantages that are hard to replicate quickly.

The Road Ahead

With revenue growing nearly 97 percent year on year, aggressive expansion into new categories, deeper retail presence, and leadership focused on brand-building, Qubo is entering its next phase of growth.

The vision is clear: make smart devices feel less like luxury gadgets and more like everyday utilities, secure, reliable, and Indian at heart.

Qubo’s story is not just about smart cameras or dashcams. It is about proving that India can build world-class consumer technology from scratch. And if its current momentum continues, this might just be the beginning of a much bigger global journey.
